How Cubbie’s sensory regulation experience works
Cubbie is a networked sensory regulation system designed for schools, healthcare providers,
workplaces, and community settings. It combines a physical sensory hub with a personalised sensory portrait®, a profile of each individual's unique sensory needs, and a structured programme developed by occupational therapists (OT). The result is a consistent, evidence-based approach to helping individuals self-regulate and participate.
What is Cubbie?
Cubbie is more than just a sensory space; it’s a supported and optimised sensory-regulation platform. It combines the physical Cubbie environment, personalised sensory programmes, staff training, usage data, OT expertise, and ongoing optimisation to help organisations deliver the right support, at the right time, at the right level of need.
Each part of the platform works together to deliver the best possible outcome for the environment and needs:
-
The sensory hub: a dedicated space that gives individuals a safe, controlled sensory environment
-
The sensory portrait®: a personalised assessment that maps each individual’s sensory preferences and needs to the experience
-
The sensory programme: a structured, OT-designed programme that tells staff exactly how and when to use Cubbie with each child
How does the sensory hub work?
Cubbie is designed as a blank space deliberately. Sensory needs aren’t one-size-fits-all. Some people need more stimulation to feel calm and focused, and others need less. This shows up differently across ADHD, autism, anxiety, and other conditions and even within the same diagnosis, no two people experience it the same way.
As a blank canvas, Cubbie uses a person’s sensory portrait® to shape light, sound, and visuals into a personalised experience that meets their specific needs.
In 10 minutes or less, this creates a calming, personalised, immersive space that helps reduce sensory stress and anxiety. In a school, that might mean a five-minute reset before a lesson. In a workplace, it’s a break before a big meeting. In a hospital waiting room, it offers a way to stay calm before an appointment.

What is a sensory portrait®?
A sensory portrait® is a detailed picture of how someone processes sensory information — sound, light, touch, movement, and more.
Most people fall somewhere on a scale between two patterns. Sensory-seeking people need more input to feel regulated. Sensory-avoiding people are the opposite: everyday sensory input can feel -overwhelming for them. They need calmer, quieter surroundings to feel settled. Many people are a mix — seeking some types of input while avoiding others.
This thinking is grounded in the work of occupational therapist Dr Winnie Dunn, whose Sensory Processing Model is one of the most widely used frameworks in the field, developed further with researcher Catana Brown.
Our team of qualified OTs uses this framework to build each person's sensory portrait®, which becomes the foundation for their personalised sensory programme.
What is a personalised sensory
programme?
A personalised sensory programme is a structured, day-by-day plan created from the individual's sensory portrait®. It tells staff:
-
Which sensory activities to use
-
When to use them
-
How to adapt them as the individual’s needs change
The programmes are designed by OTs and updated over time based on the individual's progress and needs.
Who is Cubbie for and where can it be used?
Cubbie works in any setting before, during, and after dysregulation. It helps teams and staff provide early intervention, targeted support, and specialist provision through one scalable platform.
-
A whole school approach: to support students and staff with sensory processing differences, ADHD, autism, anxiety, and stress
-
SEND units and specialist provisions: as a core tool for daily sensory regulation
-
Hospitals, clinics, and therapeutic settings: to provide consistent, evidence-based sensory support
-
Workplaces: to provide a safe and quiet environment for employees to self-regulate and return to work
-
Community settings: to create inclusive and accessible places for neurodivergent individuals so that they can participate and engage in activities

A growing network, wherever you need it
We're building a network of organisations
bringing sensory support across the UK and Ireland from schools and healthcare settings to libraries, shopping centres, workplaces, and sports environments. Our Cubbie map shows every location, and each individual has their own unique pin, so they can access their personalised sensory
programme wherever they are.
How Cubbie helps schools meet their SEND Reform requirements
Cubbie is the only sensory-regulation platform designed to address the full range of need: Universal, Targeted, Targeted Plus, and Specialist Provision. It gives staff, teachers, SENCOs, pastoral teams, and therapists, one consistent, evidence-informed way to support pupils before, during, and after dysregulation.
It helps schools:
-
Support more pupils earlier, reducing disruption and keeping children in class
-
Provide a safe, structured regulation tool that works from whole-school wellbeing through to complex SEND need
-
Build the evidence base that inspectors and review panels increasingly expect
-
Respond proactively, before pupils reach crisis, and support recovery and reintegration after incidents
It's practical, easy to deploy, and works in any setting: mainstream classrooms, SEN bases, nurture rooms, AP, PRUs, and specialist settings.
We’re working with five local authorities and hundreds of schools, all striving for the same goal: to make sure more children can stay in school, access learning, and feel like they belong.
One local authority recently examined the impact of Cubbie over two terms in three mainstream schools and the results were incredible:
-
30 additional learning hours gained per day
-
16 students with SEND successfully reintegrated into full mainstream education
These aren't just numbers. They represent children who are back in class, back with their peers, and back in reach of their own potential.

An independent impact analysis from the University of Galway
We partnered with the University of Galway to independently analyse how users engage with Cubbie, and how their emotional states shift before and after each session. The research uncovered four key findings, including that 75% of Cubbie users are regulated by their sixth session.

Understanding sensory
processing disorder: A silent struggle
